Urgent repairs

24 hour electrician help in Ontario

An urgent electrical problem is one that can start a fire, shock someone or leave a home without heat. A burning smell, a buzzing panel, a scorched outlet or a dead furnace circuit in January all qualify.

Call 911 first for smoke, fire or a person who was shocked. Call Idaho Power when a line is down or the whole block is dark.

For a problem inside your home, shop or barn, call (815) 456-4349 at any hour. We connect you with an electrician who takes urgent jobs in Ontario when one is available.

Who handles what

  • 911: fire, smoke, sparks or an injury.
  • Idaho Power: downed lines, a street outage, a damaged meter or the wires from the pole.
  • An electrician: one circuit dead, a breaker that trips again, a warm panel, power lost to a well pump or shop.

Panels

Panel upgrades and 200 amp service in Ontario

A panel upgrade replaces an old or full breaker panel with a new one, often with a larger service. Most homes that add a heat pump, an EV charger, a shop or an RV hookup need more capacity.

A service change in Ontario needs three parties. The electrician does the work, Malheur County inspects it, and Idaho Power disconnects and reconnects the meter.

Oregon adopted a new Oregon Electrical Specialty Code based on the 2026 National Electrical Code. It took effect on October 1, 2026, so new panel work follows it.

  • Load check firstThe electrician adds up your appliances to size the new service.
  • County permitThe electrician files the electrical permit with Malheur County.
  • Utility timingIdaho Power schedules the disconnect and reconnect for the meter.

Your utility

Idaho Power today, and the proposed OTEC sale

Idaho Power delivers electricity in Ontario. Ontario is the one regional center city in Idaho Power's Oregon territory, and the company runs a service center in town.

Idaho Power has filed to sell its Oregon distribution system to Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative (OTEC). About 20,000 customers in Malheur, Harney, Baker and Wallowa counties would become OTEC members.

The Oregon Public Utility Commission must approve the sale first. The case is docket UM 2447, and the companies expect it to close in early 2027 if approved.

What it means for electrical work

  • Until a sale closes, call Idaho Power for outages, meters and service changes.
  • Your home wiring and panel stay your responsibility either way.
  • Ask your electrician who to contact for a meter pull if the sale closes during your project.

Permits

Electrical permits in Ontario go through Malheur County

Malheur County Building Department issues and inspects electrical permits inside the City of Ontario. The City's fee schedule lists electrical and plumbing permits as issued and inspected by the county.

Electrical permits

Malheur County Building Department. The county also handles electrical permits in the rest of Malheur County.

Your electrician files the permit and books the inspection.

Building permits

The City of Ontario building office handles structural and mechanical permits inside city limits.

A remodel or new building often needs both a city building permit and a county electrical permit.

  • New circuits, panel changes, service upgrades and generator hookups need an electrical permit.
  • Keep the permit number. Buyers and insurers often ask for it.

Before work starts

How to check an Oregon electrician's license

Oregon licenses electricians through the Building Codes Division (BCD). A business that does electrical work also needs a Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license.

Ontario sits next to the Idaho border, and many trades work on both sides. An Idaho license does not cover electrical work in Oregon. The electrician on your Ontario job needs an Oregon license.

  1. 1. Ask for two numbersThe BCD license number and the CCB number.
  2. 2. Search BCDUse the license holder search on oregon.gov/bcd.
  3. 3. Search CCBConfirm the business license is active on the CCB website.

Local conditions

Cold winters, hot summers, farms and RVs

Ontario has a high desert climate with cold winters and hot summers. Heating load in winter and cooling load in summer both push older panels and circuits hard.

Many properties around Ontario have shops, barns, well pumps or irrigation equipment. Idaho Power serves residential, irrigation, commercial and industrial customers in Malheur County.

RVs, trailers and boats are common on larger lots. A proper RV outlet needs its own circuit sized for the rig.

Common Ontario jobs

  • Panel and 200 amp service upgrades
  • 30 and 50 amp RV outlets and pedestals
  • Shop and outbuilding feeders
  • Generator transfer switches for winter outages
  • Heat tape and well house circuits

Cost factors

What changes the price of electrical work in Ontario

The electrician sets the price and puts it in writing. We do not set prices or charge you for the referral.

These factors move the price of most Ontario jobs:

  • Distance and trenchingFeeding a shop, barn or RV pad across a yard takes trenching and longer wire.
  • Permit and inspectionMalheur County fees and inspection visits are part of the job cost.
  • Utility workService changes wait on Idaho Power to pull and reset the meter.
  • UrgencyNight and weekend calls usually cost more than a booked visit.
